(New Orleans – November 21, 2015) “The right man at the right time for Louisiana.” That is how Louisiana Federation of Teachers President Steve Monaghan introduced Representative John Bel Edwards when the Federation announced its endorsement last March.
Voters obviously agreed, and Rep. Edwards will become Governor Edwards on January 11, 2016.
“The hard work of campaigning is over,” Monaghan said after the election results were announced. “Now the even harder work begins. We pledge to work with Governor-Elect Edwards to rebuild the trust and confidence of the people of Louisiana and reclaim the promise of public education.”
The past eight years have been difficult for those who believe that public education is the best option to build an informed citizenry and prepare our children for a brighter future, Monaghan said.
“Educators have suffered through a botched roll-out of Common Core standards, unfair and inaccurate labeling of teachers and schools, poorly conceived testing regimens, the dilution of tenure and other due-process rights, and the stagnation of education funding,” said Monaghan. “It is truly time for a change of direction.
“Governor-Elect Edwards can count on the Louisiana Federation of Teachers to support him in every way possible as he guides our state through the trying times ahead.”
